Surge Harmonies

Drawing on his recent experiences of working with young people in Italy for Children of the Unquiet (2013-2014), Mikhail Karikis collaborates with the children of Calstock Community Primary School to bring their vision of the River Tamar’s future to the screen. Exploring the future of the river and how they might occupy this land and its use in years to come, reflecting on the big storms of last winter and continuous sea level rising, they worked with Professor Richard Ashley, an expert in flooding and climate change who advised the young children. Creating a sound piece and animation through from the workshops.

At his one-off artist talk event, Mikhail recalls his experiences of working with the children to explore the river and discusses their film due to be released at a later date.

Mikhail Karikis’ interdisciplinary approach embraces visual art, performance and sound, often generating collaborative projects which engage specific communities positioned outside the mainstream. In his work he investigates the role sound plays in creating a sense of collectivity that shapes people’s lives often challenging expectations and cultural conventions.
